How Long Have You Been Playing?

Interesting....I started looking through old e-mails and thinking about where I worked when I first started playing harmonica. I think from being so obsessive about it and pursuing so many sources of information it felt like longer than it was.
Turns out I started playing in September, 2007. That's a little over two years! Two obsessive, very focused years!
How long have you been playing? Send an email or respond on the blog!

  1. Hey Alberto, nice thread to start! It was April of 2006 for me. I had recently celebrated my 50th birthday and was looking for a new hobby that wouldn't scare the crud out of my wife (better than a powered parachute or motorcycle from her perspective! ) So, I bought a C harp from Musician's Friend. I began searching the web for instructors and stumbled across the HOOT website and joined the club. However, it wasn't until the December 2006 Christmas party that I started to take it seriously. The key for me was when I bought both of Jerl's CDs that night. After listening to them, I was hooked! For months after that, my practice consisted almost exclusively of playing along to those CDs. They're still my favorite Harp CDs and I listen and play along with them often. About a year after I started playing, Frank Halovanic convinced me to try chromatic which I now love.

Since starting to play, I've been drawn to playing melodies. For 2010 (after nearly four years) I plan to finally begin playing/learning some Blues. I also plan to continue learning the Bass and playing Trio music this year, if Anne doesn't kick me out of the band. ;- ) I look forward to this next chapter in my Harp journey!

  2. I bought my first harmonica in the year of 67. Twas in the Navy and as I was walking the streets of Saigon, I spoted a harmonica looking up at me. That little instrument became my best friend and helped me take my mind off the conflict going on. Was transfered to Calif. where music was happening and so was drugs, but we won't go there. Tried other instruments but found that the harmonica would say what and how I wanted to say.I found the best way to learn is to find an artist you think is the best and learn everything they do,and how they do it.
You'll never be like them but you'll develope your own style. As Tom Johnson, try other types of harmonicas and you'll find how to appreciate each.

  3. I started playing about 2 years ago. I was at an art school in New York and went to photograph a jam session. The guitar player tossed me a harp (I believe it was a D) and said they needed somebody to play with them.

I told them that I wouldn't have a clue what I was doing... but decided to fumble my way through anyway. I was hooked. Later that night the guitarist said that I brought new life into what had become a relatively stale scene.

The next day I walked down to 14th St and bought my first harp. I still play it to this day.
